Follow-on formulas are specially formulated to meet the increased nutritional
needs of older babies or young children and help to ensure that, when used in
combination with the usually available solid and semi-solid foods, the recommended
nutrient intakes are met.
Follow-on formula is manufactured from modified cows' milk. It contains added
vitamins and about the same amount of energy as breastmilk but are fortified with
iron to levels above those in infant formulas and those found in cows' milk.
Because of their iron content follow-on milks are a more appropriate alternative
to whole cows' milk which is not recommended for infants under 12 months. The
Department of Health also advises that semi-skimmed milk should not be given to
children under 2 years, and skimmed milk should not be given to children under 5
years of age.
