Breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby.
Breastmilk contains the right balance of nutrients together with anti-infective
agents which protect the baby against infection. Additionally, it is readily
available and consistently at the right temperature making it a convenient and
safe choice.
For mothers who are not able to, or choose not to breast-feed, infant formula is
the only recommended alternative. Infant formula is a milk based feed that has
been modified to suit the particular needs of infants. It is a complete food for bottlefed babies but can also be used to supplement
breastfeeding where necessary.
Infant formula companies produce a range of different products that are tailored
to meet the nutritional needs of infants and young children. Infant formula is a tightly regulated area and legislation governs the
composition, labeling and marketing of infant formulas.
