Medical foods: introduction
|
 |
The role of nutrition in maintaining good health has been recognised for
centuries and many nutritional remedies have been used to alleviate diseases. Our
understanding of the nutritional implications of certain medical conditions,
however, has increased significantly in the last 25-30 years. This has led to the
development of a wide range of dietary foods for special medical purposes which
are used by health professionals for the nutritional support of patients or the
dietary management of diseases.
These foods are also known as clinical nutrition products or medical foods.
They are used in hospitals, clinics and in the home for patients who are unable
to take, digest, absorb or eat sufficient quantities of normal foods, or for
patients who have special nutritional requirements because of metabolic disorders
or other medical conditions.
