Sports foods: introduction
|
 |
Sports foods or sports nutrition products are dietetic foods formulated to meet
the specific nutritional requirements of individuals involved in intense and/or
prolonged physical activity.
They are designed to provide energy and/or to replace the fluid and/or
nutrients which are lost as a result of exercise. They are most often consumed
shortly before, during and shortly after exhausting activity, when normal meals may
not be available, palatable or may not be well-tolerated by the
gastrointestinal tract.
Sports nutrition products are formulated to be easily digested, easily
absorbed, palatable and convenient. They are consumed to maintain body functions
which are important for optimal performance and well being. As such they
supplement the normal diet according to the specific requirements of exercising
individuals
By providing increased energy, protein or amino acids, extra fluid, vitamins,
minerals, trace elements or other ingredients, sportsfoods and drinks can play
an important role in reducing the risk of nutritional deficiencies arising from
intense physical activity. They also reduce the risk of physical exhaustion,
impaired recovery from exercise and the risk of exercise-induced metabolic and
tissue disturbances.
