Weaning is the process of introduction of a range of solid foods into the diet
of an infant. Every infant is different, and weaning typically takes place around 4 – 6 months
of age. The weaning process allows the infant to discover new tastes and
textures, and to experience different types of foods. Homemade baby foods are easy to
prepare, and are nutritious. There are also many different varieties of
commercial weaning foods available to complement normal family foods.
Commercial baby foods are made to the highest standards, complying with all
microbiological, nutritional and medical regulations. All ingredients are
controlled, and baby food companies operate dedicated supply chains to ensure that raw
materials can be traced back to source at any time.
Commercial weaning foods provide energy, protein, carbohydrate and fat. They
also contain controlled amounts of fibre and sugar. Vitamins and minerals, such as
vitamin C and iron, may be added to ensure an adequate intake or restore losses
which may occur during processing. But importantly commercial baby foods contain
no added salt and no artificial additives.
